One of the most scenic lakes in the SE, featuring 62 miles of shoreline, the highest earth-filled dam east of the Mississippi River, a full service marina, campgrounds, boat ramps, beach, picnic area, playgrounds, nature trail and a visitors center with a small museum. New Echota Cherokee Capital State Historic Site

One of the most significant Cherokee Indian sites in the nation, where the infamous “Trail of Tears” officially began and home of the first Indian language newspaper office. Visitors can tour 12 original and reconstructed buildings, including the Council House, Court House, Print Shop, Missionary Samuel Worcester's home, and an 1805 store; view interpretive exhibits and a 17-minute film.
